Houston Community College OKs 24-Acre Expansion Buy

The Houston Community College board of trustees approved the purchase of 24 acres near the University of Houston Katy campus that is currently under construction. HCC’s plan is to build a 140,000-square-foot building at 228 Colonial Pkwy. to boost student capacity at the West Houston Campus from 4,000 to 7,000 by mid-2021. The proposal includes an option to acquire an additional 30 acres.

The $55-million project will be funded through a Regions Bank short-term finance loan. Long-term revenue bonds, and the sale of three HCC properties (including the current Katy campus at 1550 Foxlake Dr. in Houston) will also help pay for the campus.

The new campus will offer freshmen- and sophomore-level classes that will help supplement the junior-, senior- and graduate-level classes taught at the UH campus at Katy. The two schools won’t be contiguous, but a shuttle will be available to transport students between the two campuses.
