Houston Becomes Latest to Join “Sanctuary Cities” Lawsuit

Houston’s city council voted 10-6 to join a lawsuit against Senate Bill 4, better known as a “sanctuary cities” measure. The Bayou City joins San Antonio, Dallas, Austin and other local governments in the suit against the immigration enforcement law.

SB 4, scheduled to take effect Sept. 1, 2017, allows local law enforcement to question the immigration status of people they legally detail or arrest. It also punishes officials who don’t cooperate with federal immigration agents by turning over immigrants.

The lawsuit, which was first filed May 8, 2017 (the day after Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed the bill into law), argues that SB 4 violates constitutional guarantees of free speech and equal protection.
