Housing Options Slim in Harvey’s Wake
The recent news about Hurricane Harvey has been centered on Houston, its flooding and economic impact. However, tertiary markets, including Victoria, TX, which is further south and inland, is also experiencing housing after-effects from the late-August storm.
The Victoria Advocate pointed out that 293 households have been relying on hotel vouchers from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The issue, however, is that undamaged hotels in Victoria have been booked solid. The other issue is that there is no immediate transitional housing in the Victoria area, and all the homeless shelters are full.
Though some non-profits have been providing grants, Victoria County Commissioner Danny Garcia said many residents are being denied FEMA assistance. The reasons vary from poor-condition homes (even before the hurricane hit), to fear of asking for help due to immigration status, Garcia told the Victoria Advocate.
