Housing Appraisals Up in Williamson, Travis Counties

The average housing property value increased in 2016 by approximately 8% in Williamson County and about 6% in Travis County. Both counties, which encompass the Austin metropolitan area, experienced a busy protest period as homeowners attempted to reduce their property taxes, according to appraisers.

Between 2016-2017, the average Travis County house rose in value from $285,332 to $307,997. Meanwhile, in Williamson County, the average home value increased from $247,848 to $268,736.

County officials told Community Impact that property appraisals are the first step in a two-step property tax process. In the first step, appraisal districts assign value to each piece of property, based on what is happening in neighborhoods and the county. On top of that, local entities assign tax rates. It’s that step in which property taxes receive the largest impact.
