Hooah! Austin Welcomes Army Futures Command Center

Less than a month after announcing that Austin was one of top five cities under consideration for a new Futures Command center, the U.S. Army put its stamp of approval on Texas’ capital city. In a televised news conference on July 13, Army Under Secretary Ryan McCarthy cited quality of life, innovation, higher education and civic support as the reasons for Austin’s selection. Boston, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Raleigh-Durham, NC, and Philadelphia were the other cities rounding out the top five finalists.

McCarthy listed additional reasons for the selection, which included entrepreneurial hubs for access to ideas and collaboration, costs of doing business for start-ups and established firms, and proximity to private-sector innovation.

A six-member team is starting to establish initial operating capacity at Army Futures Command in Austin’s CBD. A four-star general to head the command has been identified, and the Army indicated that, within a year, full operating capabilities should be achieved.
