Honda Invests $267M in Ohio Plant Enhancements
Honda Motor Co. invested $267 million into upgrades at its Marysville, OH factor, and plans to add 300 new jobs to support an expected production boost for its next-generation Accord sedan model. The Japanese automaker’s investment totaled $220 million at the Marysville plant, including a new $165-million welding department with 342 welding robots. Another $47 million went to an engine plant in Anna, OH, for turbocharged engines for the Accord.
The investment gives the Marysville plant the capacity to produce 440,000 vehicles a year, with additional expansion for the Accord, if needed.
The expansion was a bit of a surprise, given the weakening U.S. new vehicle sales, and the shifts by other manufacturers to produce trucks and SUVs. Car sales have steadily declined to just 38.1% of the U.S. market in H1 2017 from 51.2% in 2012.
