Holiday Work Week Perks
The week between Christmas and New Year’s Day is generally slow for most in the professional world. Excluding those who work in the retail, medical or hospitality sectors, office staff tends to stay home during that post-Christmas-week stretch.
But some job experts indicate that working during the holiday week can provide benefits such as:
A quiet office. Because no one is around, there are fewer managerial or collaborative responsibilities, and there is more time for strategic planning or getting deliverables completed before the start of the year, according to Graham Shorr with SquareFoot. The workplace — and workplace dress — can also be more casual during the week.
Goodwill. Chris Chance with Amplio Recruiting points out that “you instantly win friends among your coworkers who need someone to hold down the fort, while they’re celebrating at home with their families,” when working during the holiday week. He told Ladders that those who show up for that week, especially coworkers of different faiths and cultures, become more close-knit, as they share information about one another’s traditions.
A clean slate. It’s easier to get work done during that “dead week,” when bosses are gone, email volume is down, and meetings non-existent. As a result, workers can end up with a clean, organized slate at work. Noted Career Contessa’s Lauren McGoodwin: “This allows you to hit the ground running . . .versus playing catch up and having to tie up loose ends from before the holiday.”
