Holiday Treats Around the World
It’s time to be with family, open presents, celebrate the year…and undoubtedly, eat. The winter season is home to many different holidays and festivities, and here’s a quick peek into how different countries around the world celebrate the good times with good eats.
- Israel – The Jewish holiday Hanukkah is rich with oily and fried foods to commemorate the one night’s worth of oil that miraculously lasted eight days in the temple. For that reason, potato pancakes, or latkes, are made by frying peeled potatoes to create (mostly) circular hash browns.
- England – Since the 13th century, many British people have eaten mince pies around Christmastime. Sometimes filled with mincemeat and dried fruits, these pies come in all different shapes and sizes.
- Sicily – A Southern Italian Christmas is the Feast of the Seven Fish. In the region, Roman Catholics fast on Christmas Eve, and then indulge in many seafood dishes on Christmas day.
- France – Branch of Christmas, bûche de noel, is a rich cake shaped like a log (a French yule log) and decorated with meringue shaped mushrooms to make it look like the surrounding of a forest floor.
- Greece – Christmas is celebrated extensively on the islands of Greece, and some Greek people even fast on Christmas Eve. One of their traditions is to eat a honey-soaked cookie topped with walnuts, called a melomakarona.
Feel inspired? This holiday season could be the perfect time to try a new holiday tradition from a culture around the world!
