Historic Tucson Office Building On the Block
The Pioneer Building, one of the first high-rise buildings in Tucson, will go to auction next month.
Located at 100 N. Stone Ave., the iconic structure was constructed in 1929. The building, which used to be a hotel, was once the site of Tucson’s biggest tragedy when 29 died as a result of a fire in 1970. It was later converted to office space and is currently approximately 50% occupied.
The starting bid for the 11-story building, currently owned by Holualoa Companies, is $1.2 million. Auction Broker Ten-X is handling all the auction marketing and details. The auction is scheduled to run from May 14 to 16.
The building does not have a historical designation because of multiple renovations, including restorations after the 1970 fire and efforts to restore the dining room to its original state in 2017. Buyers could rezone the more than 100,000-square-foot building and approximately half-acre site for office, commercial or residential uses. A new owner could make changes without concern about preserving architectural characteristics.
