Historic 382K-SF Medical Towers Has Future as a Westin Hotel

The Medical Towers, a 382,000-square-foot building in Houston’s Texas Medical District, is currently being used as a parking garage. However, with help from developer Pearl Hospitality, the 18-story building at 1709 Dryden Rd. will re-open in 2020 as the 273-room Westin Houston Medical Center.

The building, designed by Golemon & Rolfe, with help from Skidmore, Owings & Merrill’s Gordon Bunshaft, was dedicated in 1956, and was a building solely dedicated to the practice of medicine. Margin Nadelman was the developer of the building, which received an American Institute of Architects Award.

Houston-based Pearl Hospitality acquired the Medical Towers in 2014, with plans to develop the Westin Houston Medical Center across the street from Houston Methodist and Texas Children’s hospitals. The renovation is underway, with Pearl having gutted the building and putting in electric, mechanical, plumbing and elevator systems.
