Hines Chosen to Redevelop Hobby State Building

Hines signed a ground lease with the Texas General Land Office (GLO) for the site of the shuttered William P. Hobby Jr. State Office Building and will redevelop it.

In 2023, the GLO began soliciting proposals from developers to redevelop the site, which currently houses a 419,000-square-foot state office complex that has not been kept up. it’s expected to be demolished soon.

The Austin Business Journal reports Hines is in the early planning stages of the redevelopment and has not revealed its plans for the site. The GLO stated that it wants the site to be developed with a combination of residential and commercial uses, and it has indicated that workforce housing will be a component.

The Hobby Building complex encompasses just under 2 acres and covers an entire city block in a prime downtown area.
