HGA-Designed Behavioral Center Breaks Ground in San Jose

Architectural and engineering firm HGA is celebrating the groundbreaking of the Child, Adolescent and Adult Behavioral Health Services Center, a three-story, 207,000-square-foot healthcare facility at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, CA. The building will consolidate Santa Clara County’s behavioral health offerings when it opens in Fall 2025.

“This is the kind of acute care facility we’ve long needed for young people in crisis — a sanctuary where they can safely begin to heal, close to home,” said Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian who first proposed the facility in 2015.

Key spaces within the complex include a 77-bed inpatient behavioral health hospital, separate outpatient urgent care, emergency psychiatric services, a pharmacy and a pedestrian skyway bridge that connects the emergency department to a 700-car parking structure. HGA designed the facility with outdoor activity and recreation spaces, recliners in quiet zones, maximum patient visibility, view gardens and an LEED Gold certification achievement.
