Help for East Harlem Landlords

Landlords can get help to repair their buildings in East Harlem — even if they aren’t in government-subsidized affordable housing programs. New York City wants to help these landlords keep their rents relatively affordable, instead of converting their buildings to luxury rentals or condominiums, according to the latest draft of the East Harlem Housing Plan, released by City Hall May 1.
The plan aims to “preserve, develop, and increase access to affordable housing, while promoting economic opportunity for residents,” indicated Maria Torres-Springer, commissioner of the City’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development.
It calls for the construction of 2,400 new affordable homes on publicly owned-sites in East Harlem. New Yorkers would also get guidance on how to apply for affordable housing, or potentially become workers at affordable housing construction sites.
