HDRC OKs 170K-SF H-E-B Tech Center

San Antonio’s Historic and Design Review Commission (HDRC) approved design plans for a new tech center to be built on grocery company’s H-E-B downtown San Antonio campus. Construction is set to begin on the 170,000-square-foot center in summer, 2020, with completion scheduled in 2022. Once completed, the tech center will house 1,000 employees, as the grocer consolidates and expands its tech and e-commerce division.

At five stories and 96 feet tall, the structure, designed by Lake Flato Architects, will exceed by 12 feet the height allowed by the River Improvement Overlay. However, HDRC commissioners approved the design, as the building will not be near one and two-story residential structures in the neighborhood, or the San Antonio River. As the proposed height isn’t consisted with the Unified Development Code, however, H-E-B might have to request a variance from the Board of Adjustment.
