Hays Street Bridge Project Approved, But . . .

The Bridge, a contentious multifamily development next to San Antonio’s Hays Street Bridge, was approved by City Manager Sheryl Sculley, subject to several conditions. Sculley’s okay effectively overrode the Historic and Design Review Commission’s rejection recommendation. The HDRC twice recommended rejecting the project on Cherry Street.

However, developer Loopy Ltd.  needs to meet 11 stipulations for final approval. The developer must also meet with the Dignowity Hill Architectural Review Committee to reach an agreement on the stipulations, which include:

  • Specific lighting requirements and window specifications
  • A plan ensuring that roof-mounted equipment is hidden from public view
  • Greater separation from the building’s south face and bridge
  • Exploration of the flexibility to reduce the overall building height

The project is months behind schedule, and has become a divisive political issue on San Antonio’s East Side.
