The site of the Harlem African Burial Ground will soon become a building filled with apartments, including many affordably priced for low-income earners.

On March 8, 2017, City officials announced the outlines of possible redevelopment on the site at East 126th Street, including a permanent outdoor memorial to the Burial Ground, commercial space to bring jobs to the community and up to 750 new apartments. At least half of the units will be “affordable” with formal income restrictions, while at least 20% will be geared to households with very low incomes.

The Harlem African Burial Ground was active until at least 1856. Since then, the land has been many things — most recently a bus depot.

“For over a decade, my office has worked with the Harlem African Burial Ground Task Force to help develop a vision for this important historic site,” said New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.
