Haggen Bankruptcy Could Mean More Closures

Northwest grocery chain Haggen, which recently entered the Southern California market, has filed for bankruptcy. Haggen purchased 146 former Safeway and Albertsons stores (including 25 locations in San Diego County), late last year and converted them to its own brand.

Haggen had previously announced that it was going to close six of its San Diego County locations, and now that number will likely increase. Haggen officials recently indicated they would close 27 locations in the new markets it had entered, but more closures are likely on the way.
