Habitat for Humanity Plans Houses from Containers
Affordable townhomes are being planned for McKinney, TX, a far north suburb of Dallas. The Cotton Groves, at Bumpas and Fitzhugh streets, is a three-acre plot purchased by North Collin County Habitat for Humanity. The organization is planning 35 units – to be created from shipping containers.
Each 1,280-square-foot townhome will consist of four shipping containers, which will form three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a second-floor balcony and carport. Habitat’s plan is to sell the units to people at 30% of their gross monthly income. Qualified applicants must have lived or worked in north Collin County for at least one year, currently be living in substandard housing, and be willing to build their home, and others.
Infrastructure still needs to be built, and the organization needs to raise $4.5 million for the project. Also, a current abandoned house on the site is contaminated with asbestos and lead-based paint, and requires clean-up funds.
