H-E-B Takes Top Spot in 2020 dunnhumby Retailer Preference Index
H-E-B was ranked the top U.S. grocery retailer on the third annual dunnhumby Retailer Preference Index. The 2020 index is a nationwide study examining the $700-billion U.S. grocery market. H-E-B, headquartered in San Antonio, TX, knocked Monrovia, CA-based Trader Joe’s from the top spot, which it had held for the past two years. H-E-B also scooted ahead of Amazon and Costco in the survey.
The RPI ranking weighed retailer performance on seven factors: Price, quality digital, operations, convenience, discount/rewards and speed. As such, findings from the study included:
- Traditional, regional grocers are winning customers with relevance and convenience.
- Price and quality are the two most important customer needs retailers must meet.
- H-E-B, Fry’s Smith’s and Kroger are just as prepared for the next economic downturn as Costco.
- Not all discount grocers are faring well.
