GSA Modifies Search Criteria for New FBI Headquarters Location

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) said Friday it had modified the scoring criteria in selecting a new headquarters location for the FBI in the suburbs of Washington, DC. The revised scoring metric increases the focus on cost and equity while reducing the importance of proximity to the bureau’s training facility in Quantico, VA.

The three sites under review (in Greenbelt, MD; Landover, MD; and Springfield, VA) were selected in 2014 by GSA. All three sites met the FBI’s baseline requirements, including the ability to accommodate a headquarters campus, according to GSA.

“Under the updated plan, our priorities for the new headquarters remain the same: fulfill FBI mission needs, meet the needs of the FBI workforce and provide maximum value for taxpayers, relying on GSA’s expertise and best practices in site selection,” said FBI assistant director Nicholas Dimos.

The Washington Business Journal reported that the changes followed months of lobbying by Maryland officials, who complained that the initial criteria put too much emphasis on access to Quantico. GSA anticipates making a site selection in the coming months, while also identifying a site for a facility in downtown DC, where the FBI is currently headquartered.
