Groundbreaking Takes Place on Houston Spaceport, Phase I
The Houston Airport System has officially broken ground on the Houston Spaceport. The first phase, being built for $18.8 million, will include infrastructure (streets, water, wastewater, electrical power and communication facilities) and 53,000 square feet of lab and office space. The project’s first phase is being built on 154 acres at Ellington Airport on the metro’s southeast side.
Texas Sterling-Banicki JV LLC is developing the infrastructure. Meanwhile, Intuitive Machines, the first company to sign on as a spaceport tenant, is already at work developing lunar landing and drone technology.
The FAA-licensed commercial spaceport will provide a launch and landing site for suborbital, reusable launch vehicles. The development will also offer laboratory office space, including technology incubator space and large-scale production facilities.
