Greenest States: California Ranks 9th Nationally
Earth Day is just around the corner on April 22, and many economies around the U.S. are still recovering from the past year’s devastating hurricane season. Set against that backdrop, the personal-finance website WalletHub released its report, “2018’s Greenest States.”
California was ranked No. 9 on the overall list. The top five states included Vermont (No.1), Oregon (2), Massachusetts (3), New York (4) and South Dakota (5). California scored high on Eco-friendly behaviors (3) and Climate Change Contributions (4), but lagged on Environmental Quality (43).
In order to showcase the states doing right by Mother Earth, WalletHub compared the 50 states in terms of 23 key metrics that speak to the current health of the environment and residents’ environmental-friendliness. The data set ranges from total municipal solid waste per capita, to energy-efficiency score, to carbon-dioxide emissions per capita.
Greenness of California (1=Greenest, 25=Avg.):
22nd – Water Quality
3rd – % of Recycled Municipal Solid Waste
13th – LEED-Certified Buildings per Capita
18th – % of Renewable Energy Consumption
3rd – Energy Consumption per Capita
