Green Homes Certification Hits New High
The number of LEED-certified homes — both single-family residences and multifamily properties — has grown by almost 20% since 2017, according to a report issued by the U.S. Green Building Council (USBGC). Entitled “LEED in Motion: Residential,” the report offered metrics concerning Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and its impact on residential housing. The report noted that LEED-certified homes:
- Encompass more than 400,000 single-family, multifamily and affordable housing units in the United States. Of these units, more than 5,000 have achieved LEED Platinum.
- Use an average of 20%-30% less energy than a home built to code. Some units report energy savings as much as 60% over code requirements.
- Cover more than 46 million total square feet in California, the state with the most certified units.
Following California for the most certified units (at 39,296) was Texas, which has 24,598 certified units. New York State came in third, with 10,876 LEED-certified units.
