Empire Square Group to build apartments, retail in downtown Austin

Grant Plaza Targeted for Redevelopment

Empire Square Group hopes to tear down three forty year old commercial buildings at Austin’s Grant Plaza to build 258 multifamily units, along with retail and restaurants. The redevelopment, to be called the Grant Building, calls for 260,000 square feet on 1.8 acres at 611 E. Sixth St. The 78-foot-tall building would feature a central courtyard.

The Grant Building would also have ground-floor retail. Plans show two retail spaces stretching the width of the project from Red River Street on the west to Sabine Street on the east. The plans also note the possibility of ground-floor coworking space and a gym.

Steinberg Hart and Belshaw Mulholland Architects are listed as project architects, and Civil & Environmental Consultants Inc. is the civil engineer and land surveyor.
