Government Shutdown Avoided, $854B in Funding Approved
President Donald Trump has signed an $854-billion spending bill into law that will keep the government funded through December 7. Fiscal year-end funding expired September 30. The Senate appropriations package was ratified by the House last week, thus avoiding a government shutdown heading into November’s pivotal midterm elections.
The approved spending plan keeps 75% of all government operations fully-funded through September 30, 2019, and the remaining portion of government funding (including those involving the SEC and Treasury Dept.) is now set to expire December 7.
The actions are considered a significant achievement for Congress, which has been challenged to get past decisions over trade wars and court nominations. The package includes funding military and several civilian agencies, but doesn’t provide significant new funding for the President’s U.S.-Mexico border wall.
