Gotta Shop at 3 AM? Walmart Says ‘We Got a Kiosk for That’

The one-upmanship continues between retail rivals Walmart and Amazon. The latest salvo are automated kiosks, where Walmart customers can pick up groceries 24/7.

The Bentonville, AR retail giant is testing a kiosk in Oklahoma City, where customers drive up, punch in a code and the kiosk fetches the order from bins inside. The service isn’t for short grocery lists, since customers have to spend at least $30. Another caveat is that orders must be placed during store hours, though so far there’s no other special fees or limitations.

Walmart plans to test the service over the coming months, gather feedback and determine if a full-scale roll-out is warranted. And in the quest for faster shopping, Amazon recently opened its first drive-through grocery store, and is testing an internet-powered grocery store that features no checkout lines.
