Google’s Life Sciences Unit Moving to Biotech Hub in SSF
Google’s life sciences business unit, Verily Life Sciences, is reportedly relocating 30 miles north, to a three-building campus formerly occupied by Amgen’s Onyx Pharmaceuticals Inc. in South San Francisco. Verily would sublease more than 400,000 square feet of space in a global biotech hub at 249 to 279 E. Grand Ave., that could be home to 1,000 employees.
The leases extends to 2024 for a mix of lab and office facilities constructed in 2010, 2012 and 2013, as well as land that Onyx purchased for future expansion from Pasadena-based Alexandria Real Estate Equities Inc.
As Verily emerges from Google’s shadow in Mountain View, it removes a high-profile block of space from a tight biotech market, and relieves pressure on Amgen to shed real estate.
