Google Walks Away from Deal for Retail Flagship

A 14,000-square-foot space in the Fulton Market District that Google sought to occupy for its first flagship store is back on the market, the Chicago Tribune reported. The tech giant, whose Chicago regional headquarters is in Fulton Market, has walked away from the deal.

It’s not clear why Google backed out of plans for a store along West Randolph Street, or whether the company is considering other spaces around Chicago or a flagship store in another city, according to the Tribune. To date, the company has only opened pop-up locations, including one in Bucktown as well as locations in London and New York City.

Newcastle Ltd., owner of the connected brick buildings at 835 to 843 W. Randolph, where Google was negotiating a retail deal, is reportedly marketing the space to other prospects. It’s expected to get a boost from nearby hotels bringing foot traffic to the area.
