Google Picks Up 1,200 Acres Near Reno
An Alphabet Inc. affiliated entity called Silver Slate LLC acquired 1,210 acres east of Reno, NV for $29.1 million. The vacant site, within the 107,000-square-foot Tahoe Reno Industrial Center (TRIC), is envisioned to be developed as a data center for Google.
Reno is emerging as a corporate facility location that offers lower costs, business-friendly permitting, as well as relative proximity to the Silicon Valley. Roughly 130 companies are at the industrial campus, including Tesla Motor Co., Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Switch, Alcoa Inc. and PetSmart.
A facility at TRIC would help Google push toward cloud computing, and will support its core internet business. A new fiber-optic connection links the site with the Silicon Valley, Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and allows data to be delivered around the loop in less than 14 milliseconds.
