Google Goes Modular

Google is turning into a modular housing developer. It plans to build 300 apartments for its employees, using modular construction at its planned Bay View campus at NASA’s Moffett Field.

These apartments would be built by Factory OS of Vallejo, CA, and trucked to the building site in large pieces, each about the size of a shipping container. Modular construction can deliver savings in construction costs, in addition to saving a significant amount of time, which also saves developers money.

“The housing crisis and the way that housing costs have risen requires cities and regions, the Bay Area specifically, to come up with alternate options that are creative and that are potentially less expensive,” said Charley Goss, spokesman for the San Francisco chapter of the California Apartment Association to The Mercury News. “People are excited about prefab housing — it’s a great option.”
