Google Breaks Ground on $600M Alabama Data Center

Google broke ground on a $600-million data center in Jackson County, Alabama. The 360-acre site in Bridgeport is located roughly 140 miles north of Birmingham. The facility is next to a former Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Widows Creek coal-fired power plant, which was decommissioned in 2015.

The Google facility will be a hub for Internet traffic, and is the state’s first large-scale data center. Once completed in 2019, the center will employ up to 100 people in highly technical positions.

Google said it chose the site because Jackson County had the right combination of energy infrastructure, developable land, and available workforce for the data center.

The facility is Google’s 14th data center globally, and eighth in the U.S. TVA will work with Google in providing renewable energy to fully match the facility’s power usage.
