Ginkgo Bioworks Shrinks Office and Lab Footprint in Boston, Cambridge

Ginkgo Bioworks Holdings Inc. is looking to address $65 million of excess space as one of its 2025 goals. To that end, the cell programming and biosecurity company has already canceled plans to move into Biofab1, a new 260,000-square-foot lab data center it’s been building near its current headquarters in Boston’s Seaport district, reported the Boston Business Journal. It also moved out of its Cambridge sites. All of these spaces are now available for sublease.

However, the company’s newly filed annual report shows that it also started subleasing part of its headquarters at 27 Drydock Ave. in 2024, the Business Journal reported. Ginkgo says its leases for the facility total more than 320,000 square feet of office and laboratory space, of which 27,000 is now subleased and 129,000 is currently available for sublease.

“I will say, please don’t hesitate to reach out if you are a growing biotech looking for space in Cambridge or Boston,” CEO Jason Kelly said on Ginkgo’s 2024 earnings call this week.
