Georgia Power Responds to Data Center Energy Requirements

Georgia Power was granted approval for a plan that will allow the company to proceed with procuring approximately 9,900 megawatts (MW) of electricity. The Atlanta Business Chronicle reports the $16 billion planned project aims to meet an expected increase in electricity demand from data centers. Georgia currently has 162 data centers, with 285 more under construction.

The Georgia Public Service Commission approved Georgia Power’s proposal to build new power plant facilities that would generate an additional 9,900 megawatts of electricity in the next five years. The company requested certification of more than 3,600 MW of combined cycle natural gas generation, over 3,000 MW of new battery energy storage systems (BESS), 350 MW of BESS plus solar and more than 2,800 MW of power purchase agreements.
