Georgetown Attempting to Meet Affordable Housing Issues Head On
More than 500 affordable housing units are currently in Georgetown, TX’s construction pipeline. That amount, however, might not be enough to meet the growing demand for lower-cost housing. This is why Georgetown staffers are starting to collect information to develop a new “housing toolkit” as part the city’s 2030 Comprehensive Plan update.
City housing coordinator Susan Watkins told Community Impact that population growth, combined with increasing housing costs and stagnating wages are leading residents to seek help with rental costs. Meanwhile, the wait list for the city’s affordable options are from four to six years.
In addition to the comprehensive plan update, Williamson County commissioners have begun discussions on forming a partnership with the Texas Housing Foundation. The foundation operates affordable properties in Georgetown, Round Rock and Liberty Hill, and a vote on the partnership is expected shortly.
