Gensler Rolls Out Building Materials Mandate

Gensler has launched sustainability standards for common construction materials to reduce carbon footprints. Manufacturers must meet these standards for materials such as gypsum board and interior paint, focusing on metrics like global warming potential and indoor-air impacts.

While starting with achievable standards, Gensler plans to increase requirements gradually. Despite challenges in decarbonizing materials like concrete and steel, Gensler aims to expand these standards while promoting market-differentiating product specifications.

The focus on embodied carbon complements operational emission reduction efforts. While materials like concrete and steel pose challenges for decarbonization, the firm’s initiative aligns with broader industry efforts to measure environmental impact and promote sustainable practices.
