Generator Studio Designs $65M Chicago Blackhawks Arena Expansion
Generator Studio, a Kansas City-based architecture and interior design firm, has been selected to design a $65 million expansion of Fifth Third Arena for the Chicago Blackhawks, reported the Kansas City Business Journal.
The existing facility serves as the practice home for the NHL team, which is one of the league’s “Original Six” teams. The city of Chicago approved the 135,000-square-foot expansion, and the privately funded project will include a new outdoor seating area, public cafe and multipurpose event spaces. The project also will improve access for pedestrians and to the city’s public transportation system.
Additional expansion phases mentioned in the team’s zoning application envision as many as 1,200 residential units, 663 hotel rooms, retail space and parking, according to Crain’s. Construction of the arena expansion is scheduled to begin in early 2024, with a completion target of early 2026. The existing arena opened in 2017.
