Generation Z’s Best & Brightest Want Healthcare Careers

Save the date for Connect Healthcare on November 8 – a national event at the Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Spa. More details coming soon.

The demographic group known as Generation Z, or Gen Z, is now in high school and the first years of college. The highest-achieving students in this group rank healthcare as one of the most appealing industries, according to the National Society of High School Scholars’ 2017 Career Interest Survey.

The NSHSS survey found that 31% of its members plan to pursue careers in the medical/health field, while another 21% will build careers in the science industry.

Gen Z, born in the late 1990s and early 2000s, is larger than its millennial predecessors by a million people. This demographic group is quite different from Millennials. Members of Gen Z grew up in post-9/11 recession-era America. They have a pragmatic world view, and they have never known a period without texting, memes, or Twitter.

NSHSS is an honors society for outstanding students. Its scholars represent the most promising talent for colleges and the emerging workforce. In 2016, 64% of NSHSS members had a cumulative GPA of 3.7 or higher.

“Our survey sets the tone for what to expect from Generation Z teens, who are just a few years away from entering the workforce,” says James W. Lewis, president of NSHSS. “These digital natives came of age in a time of political and economic turmoil, but the education and career plans they’re making show how much they want to help others, learn new things and explore the world around them.”
