Los Angeles-based grocer Gelson’s Markets wants to be successful in areas that Haggen was not. Gelson’s is now bidding on eight Southern California Haggen sites that have closed because of bankruptcy.

Gelson’s is looking to occupy stores in Carlsbad, Del Mar, Laguna Beach, Ladera Ranch, Pacific Beach, Rancho Mirage, Thousand Oaks and Santa Monica.

The Gelson’s bid still needs to be approved by the bankruptcy court handling the Haggen case. Gelson’s currently operates 18 stores throughout Southern California.
