Garage Development Paid for by Asset Forfeitures

The McAllen, TX police department has launched construction on a 136-spot, two-story parking garage at a cost of $3.8 million. But taxpayers aren’t footing the bill. Rather, the project is being paid for through asset forfeitures, meaning McAllen citizens don’t have to pay anything.

Police Chief Victor Rodriguez acknowledged that paying for construction via asset forfeitures isn’t common in the region. However, the police department used the method before when it expanded its main department building. “It makes sense with this garage, because it will be here for the next 50 years,” he told the Edinburg Monitor.

The garage, at Pecan and Bicentennial Boulevards, will be finished before the end of 2017. Rodriguez and McAllen Mayor Jim Darling noted that the garage won’t get in the way of the surrounding neighborhood, which was an important consideration during the planning.
