A Fresh ‘Vibe’ for Convenience Stores
It may take two to tango, but in this case, it takes a little more to Foxtrot. There’s a relatively new local convenience store concept called Foxtrot in Chicago that is growing both within the city and nationally. It is establishing a fresh approach in the ever-changing retail market – one that prioritizes experience and convenience.
With competition from Amazon Go and the like, Foxtrot has quickly accomplished a 50/50 split between online delivery and in-person traffic, and hopes to continue its success after a $6 million funding round. With a similar setup as local coffee shops, Foxtrot differentiates itself from typical convenience stores by adding a cool vibe that invites shoppers to stay a while, offering good music, nice lighting, craft brewery options and artisanal coffees.
Foxtrot’s CEO and co-founder Mike LaVitola says that technology isn’t enough; “We want to infuse the corner store with hospitality and a sense of place.”
Combined with local design firm Studio K’s aesthetic flare and real estate in high-income, highly walkable neighborhoods, the concept is taking off and offering data for the future of successful retail hybrid concepts.
