Former Studio Movie Grill Rebrands, Reopens in Chatham

Detroit-based Emagine Entertainment has reopened a former Studio Movie Grill location in the South Side’s Chatham neighborhood. Now known as Chatham Cinema Powered by Emagine, the venue at 210 W. 87th St. is the company’s first location in the city of Chicago and its second in the metro area.

The 14-screen theater closed in March 2020 amid the pandemic, and Dallas-based SMG announced this past spring that the closure would be permanent. Around that time, Jon Goldstein, the theater’s landlord as well as partner in Emagine, announced plans to refurbish and reopen the property.

The Chicago Tribune reported in May that 21st Ward Ald. Howard Brookins Jr. said plans for the reborn Chatham Cinemas could be “a win-win for the community. Jon’s trying to create a neighborhood theater, as opposed to just a theater in a neighborhood.”

Emagine operates 27 theatres in five Midwestern states.
