Former Chicago YMCA Redeveloped Into Lawson House Apartments
Holsten Development was joined by Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and city officials to celebrate the grand opening of an affordable housing development, Lawson House, located in Gold Coast.
The $128 million project has transformed the former Chicago Avenue YMCA into a 409-unit affordable housing development. The property also features 4,669 square feet of ground-floor retail space. Funding for Lawson House was largely provided by JPMorgan Chase & Co. Inc., marking one of the company’s largest investments in an affordable housing development.
Farr Associates served as the architect for the project with Walsh Construction as the general contractor. At the event, Johnson also announced the appointment of Sendy Soto as the city’s first Chief Homelessness Officer, tasked with developing a five-year plan to address homelessness in Chicago.
Lawson House dates back to 1931 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built with a gift to the YMCA from Victor Lawson, publisher of the Chicago Daily News, it opened as a full-service hotel with social services.
