Flournoy to build apartments next to Vanguard offices

Flournoy Eyes Former Centene Campus for 580-Apartment/Townhome Venture

A site plan filed with the city of Charlotte shows Flournoy Development Group wants to build as many as 560 multifamily units and up to 20 townhomes on land that once was expected to be part of Centene’s $1 billion campus in University City.

The Atlanta Business Chronicle reports Centene paid $9 million for the land in August 2020. In July 2020, Centene paid $10 million for an adjacent 80.7-acre property at 2405 Governor Hunt Road. Centene built a 700,000-square-foot office building there prior to abandoning the project in August 2022.

Vanguard Group bought the 700,000-square-foot building (photo) for $117 million in April. Vanguard plans to consolidate its 2,400 local employees in the University Research Park building from several offices scattered around Charlotte.

Flournoy filed a petition with the city to rezone the 52-acre site at 2200 One Electrolux Way and 10200 Claude Freeman Drive from office institutional to community activity center district, which would allow for multifamily development.
