Floodproof Luxury at American Copper
Worried about environmental devastation from rising sea levels? The American Copper Buildings might be a great place to live. The luxury towers are designed so that tenants could live in the property’s 760 apartments for at least a week, even if their neighborhood floods and the building has to rely on its own generators.
“We said: ‘Water is going to come in here. What are we going to do about it?’” said Simon Koster, a principal for JDS Development Group, developer of the towers, in an interview with the New York Times.
Resilient design is an increasingly popular amenity for luxury apartments, especially as developers build expensive properties along New York City’s redeveloped waterfronts, and devastating storms like Hurricane Sandy become more common.
