First Renderings of the Replacement for the Sunshine Cinemas
Demolition will begin by March at the Sunshine Cinemas, built in 1917 in Manhattan’s Lowest East Side. The first renderings of the new 65,000-square-foot office and retail building, planned for 141 E. Houston St., have appeared in the New York Times. Designed by Roger Ferris, it will be completed in late 2019.
“We’re big fans of the Lower East Side. It tends to be very active, obviously, on a night-life basis. We believe there is a real demand for office space and for people to work there during the day,” indicated Jonathon Yormak, founder of East End Capital.
A petition to landmark the building was rejected reportedly because the interior of the cinema had been significantly altered.
