First Ever Twitter Transfer of Power
President Trump was sworn in as President of the United States on January 20, 2017 in a transfer of political power, which is nothing new for the nation. However, as the 45th President, he was the first to experience a social media transfer of power, gaining control of the @POTUS, @VP44 and @FLOTUS44 Twitter handles.
The National Archives and Records Administration will house the previous tweets made by the Obama administration, as immediately after President Trump was sworn in, the accounts refreshed with a clean slate. The @WhiteHouse and @POTUS accounts have amassed millions of followers, which President Trump inherits, compounding the millions that follow his personal account, @RealDonaldTrump.
A Twitter spokesman confirmed that the social media company has a dedicated team in Washington that advises Congress and the White House on best practices.
President Trump now has the choice to tweet from @POTUS, or his personal handle.
