Ferry-Oriented Development for Rudin

A giant new development on the Brooklyn waterfront probably wouldn’t exist without New York City’s new ferry system, which served its millionth passenger earlier this summer.

“If you can’t get there by subway and ferry, we don’t want to own it,” according to Bill Rudin, CEO for Rudin, to the Wall Street Journal. “People’s commutation has totally changed.”

Rudin Management Co. and Boston Properties Inc. are building a 675,000 square-foot office building on the Brooklyn Navy Yard‘s waterfront called Dock 72. It’s actually somewhat hard to get to by subway — the F-Train station is a 10-minute walk. But the NYC Ferry stops in front of the building.

Dock 72 will be anchored by a 220,000-square-foot lease with global co-working firm WeWork Cos. It is expected to open next summer, with space ready for tenants to build out in the winter of next year.
