Feds Unearth $1.5B for Purple Line Extension
The federal government is providing nearly $1.5 billion in grants and loans to fund the second phase of Metro’s Purple Line extension from Beverly Hills to Century City slated to commence in 2018. Funding is split between a $1.187-billion FTA New Starts grant and a $307-million loan through the U.S. DOT’s low-interest TIFIA program.
The $2.4-billion project is receiving additional funding through a separate $169 million federal grant, and $747 million from L.A. County’s Measure R sales tax.
The first phase of construction started in 2014, and pushes 3.9 miles further west from the current end of the line at Wilshire/Western. New stations are being added at Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax and Wilshire/La Cienega.
The next phase of the project will extend the line 2.6 miles, with new stops at Wilshire/Rodeo in downtown Beverly Hills, and at Constellation Blvd. and Avenue of the Stars in Century City.
