Family Grocer Celebrates 100 Year Birthday by Closing Store

Wolfe’s Market is closing after 100 years as a small, family-operated grocer in Claremont, CA. This week, the store started a clearance sale that will conclude May 31 when the doors close for good.

The Wolfe family plans to retrench its profitable deli business, and open a restaurant at the 5,000-square-foot market at 160 W. Foothill Blvd., which will retain the Wolfe’s Market name. Later this year, the Meat Cellar restaurant and butcher shop plans to lease the front of the space.

The independent market faced stiff competition from three nearby supermarkets, and found leverage tough to secure from grocery distributors. But, its attention to customer service, often delivering groceries to customers, and location near the Claremont Colleges, helped sustain the market through the decades.

As part of Claremont Heritage’s May 20 gala, the Wolfe family will be honored for its 100 years of service to the community.
