Facebook’s Expanding Real Estate Plans

Seven years ago, Facebook arrived in Menlo Park, CA, accompanied by cranes and construction for its massive 525,236-square-foot campus. The company, despite some negative headlines surrounding the presidential election and its news algorithms, has plans to redevelop swaths of land to potentially double its workforce to 35,000 over the next decade.

In the past year, Facebook has been aggressive in pushing forward leases across the Bay Area – from taking over a dozen buildings in the East Bay, to entering San Francisco for the first time with the lease-up of two brand-new towers.

Margaret O’Mara, a professor at the University of Washington, says that Facebook’s growth is indicative of how technology companies are “adapting their real estate” as they expand their campuses, because “they can’t be in one place anymore. They’re just so big.”
